Now that LiveJournal is back up... I should post a quick update about my cat. We're doing fine. As I said in the comments on the previous post, I believe what happened is that Nimiel is not in fact spayed and she went into heat. She behaved notably differently from that Saturday night through Wednesday. She was much less playful, showing little interest in chasing around her toys or even in batting and nipping at my hands. On the other hand, she was much more interested in being petted for a long time, and rolling around on her back, and she frequently made short little whimpering meows and chirps. She was restless all night, continually doing circuits around the apartment, and often mewing loudly with a different, deep meow. Sunday night and Tuesday night, I isolated her in half the apartment, shutting her into the hallway/bathroom/kitchen area, and that let me get a decent night's sleep. Monday and Wednesday nights, she simply wasn't as agitated and noisy, so I didn't shut her away, and I was still able to get a decent sleep.
Thursday night she seemed to be getting back to normal, and yesterday and today it's clear she's over it. She's back to being kittenish, and only letting me pet her for a little while before she starts biting at my hand. Next Saturday I have to bring her back to the vet anyhow, for her booster shots, so that's when I'll have them do a proper visual check for a spaying scar. I will be surprised and perturbed if they find one, because I really think her distinctly different behavior means she was in heat.
In other news, "heatwave" is decidedly not what the weather has been like here in Seattle; it's been cold and rainy, with constant threats of freezing rain and snow. We even had a light covering of snow last Sunday. For some reason it's felt particularly cold today in the apartment, and I've had no desire to go out. However, I am about to head out despite the weather, to catch a show at the Capitol Hill Arts Center. Back in October I went to see Do Make Say Think and Kinski, and also caught a band named Odessa that I enjoyed - instrumental "chamber music" -type art rock, featuring a violinist. A couple weeks ago I heard another instrumental on KEXP that sounded really good, even familiar, but I didn't recognize the band name, Sun Vow. When the DJ came on the air to announce the songs, however, it turned out that Odessa had renamed themselves Sun Vow, and their next show was - is - tonight. So with that, I'm off to the show.
(Edit over two years later (5/17/07): the show that evening also featured electronic artists Foscil and Steve Fisk. They were good, Foscil perhaps being the most interesting. Steve Fisk played with another artist, if I recall correctly on cello and percussion. Also I think Sun Vow turned out to be not as interesting at this show as they were when I saw them as Odessa.)
