I just had a discussion with my landlord. The landlord and his family live in Yakima, but he works in Seattle. Rather than continue to rent a room in the city, he decided to buy a building so that he'd have a place to stay overnight during the week, and also benefit long-term from being a landlord. Ever since he bought this building, he's planned to expand the back two apartments into three-bedroom units, and he's finally received the building permits.
Now I live in the front upstairs apartment, so that does not affect me directly. But the landlord currently uses the downstairs back apartment (B) for himself, and after it's expanded, it won't make sense for him to keep using a three-bedroom apartment. Instead, he wants to move upstairs into my apartment, C. That leaves me with the options of moving down into B, and finding a couple roommates or paying for all that extra space myself; or moving out. So now, I'm faced with the question, do I just look for a new apartment or do I go for the condo now?
I should say first that the best estimate for the work on the building to be done is mid-June, and it may well end up taking longer than that. The landlord's also in no hurry to kick me out because he knows how good a tenant I am. And as I explained to him, my parents are coming for a two-week visit in mid-July, so I'd rather stay in my current apartment until after their visit, if possible - it'd be much easier on me than having to move right before they arrive - and he's cool with that in theory at least. So I'm not in urgent need of a new place, but it is likely I'll need to be moving by the end of August at the latest.
This means I will have to meet goal #2 for this year: Do the research on buying a condo, and if possible financially, start looking for a place. Because I just don't know enough yet to know whether I can realistically find and buy a place in the next three months (I'd guess that's too short to actually finish the buying process), therefore I have to start the research now to know whether this is a feasible option or whether I just have to find a new apartment.
