I've been all excited for the past few weeks anticipating the February concert, Sing-Sing at Chop Suey. As I mentioned a couple weeks back, I saw them on tour for their first album in 2002 and really enjoyed it, and I've been hoping for a follow-up tour ever since. I really love their first album too, very solid stuff.

Well, my first clue probably should have been the fact that the show was listed as "Sing Sing with Low-Budget (of Hollertronix)" for the headliner. Note the lack of a hyphen in "Sing Sing". Also, I had no idea who Low-Budget or Hollertronix are, but I figured it was either some kind of double bill or their backing band for the evening - Sing-Sing's officially just two people, but they had a couple backing musicians for the first tour, so it made sense.

My second clue was earlier this week, when I looked over the club listings again. Some of them, including the Three Imaginary Girls calendar and The Stranger music calendar, didn't mention Sing Sing at all, just Low-Budget. Well that was odd, but then again the event calendars weren't up to date in January when I went to see Halou, and Beehive had replaced Zoe Keating.

The third clue that I ignored was that Sing-Sing's website had no mention of a tour on it, let alone tour dates. Hey, maybe they just hadn't updated their site in a while, it happens. (Yeah, right... idiot.)

Unfortunately, I didn't pick up on the last two clues tonight before we paid the cover price at the door. ("We" being my friends John and Elizabeth, and me.) The fourth clue was that the poster for that evening's concert just didn't look quite right - somehow it didn't look like the kind of poster that'd be used for Sing-Sing. (Also, if I'd read it closely, I'd have figured out what was wrong.) The last clue was that the doors had opened 20 minutes ago, but we were clearly the very first people in. I've been to some sparsely attended concerts, and arrived early, and still not had that happen.

Sure enough: Sing-Sing are not on tour and were not appearing at Chop Suey. Instead, "Sing Sing" was the name given to a DJ/dance night event at Chop Suey. According to the flyers, it's a regular event, every first and third Friday of the month. However, checking Chop Suey's calendar, there's no listing for Sing Sing on the first Friday of February - that certainly would've tipped me off, if it'd said "Sing Sing" was happening twice in the month two weeks apart. There's also no listing for the event last month or in December; I certainly would've noticed if it'd been ongoing. So apparently I managed to catch the very first of these events, and by premiering on a third Friday, was fooled by the calendar only listing it once. Furthermore, it's actually only listed for the first Friday next month; no event is yet scheduled for the third Friday, and in April the first Friday event has the same producers and two of the same bands/DJs but doesn't say "Sing Sing" on it.

So! betrayed!

To add insult to injury, the website said $5 cover, we were charged $6 at the door - again, that happens sometimes, no big deal - but then the door girl came to tell us there'd been a mistake and cover was $8. I should've just refused to pay at that point, but we paid up.

We still had a pretty good evening. We'd met at Barca first for drinks; it's one of my favorite bars, I just like the decor and feel of the place, but I rarely go there. We stayed at Chop Suey for a while, and the opening DJ was okay, but since it was loud for talking and they weren't going to have the band we'd wanted to see, we decided to move on. We ended up at Bleu Bistro, on Broadway and John, which is a cool funky place with seating divided up into tiny curtained alcoves. They serve food late, and although they don't have desserts and they don't have fries, they do have really damn good mashed potatoes. It's definitely a place we'll be going back to.

Meanwhile, I need to find another show for February, but it doesn't look good. When I'd been looking over the listings in January, I hadn't really seen anything until Sing Sing jumped out. Taking a quick look now at the TIG calendar, the only obvious option is Kristin Hersh, but all she's doing is an in-store appearance at Easy Street Records in Queen Anne on Thursday the 22nd at 6 pm, and I'm not leaving work early just for that. I may just have to pass on this month.
