The prices of not starting my work right away today, when I got the file: I wasn't able to go to the KEXP mailing party as I'd intended; I still haven't had dinner because I'm trying to get this thing done before spending time preparing food; and I'm making a ridiculously short post here just to follow through on my goal. (Also no doubt there are other things I could have and should have done today, if I weren't taking so long on this.)
There's a Ralph Waldo Emerson quotation, often misquoted or misapplied: "A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds, adored by statesmen and philosophers and divines." (The second clause is also often left out.) In the original context, it's apparently about how small-minded people are held back or cause themselves trouble by insisting on sticking to a set of rules without understanding their purpose. But "foolish consistency" could be taken in other ways. In my case the foolish consistency is my foolishly consistent behavior of procrastination, which puts me in these awkward or troublesome situations; also, more in keeping with the original quotation, there's the fact that I'm pausing in my work to make this silly little post just because I've set a rule for myself that I have to post every day. I'm also still working on this document due to others' inability to understand and consistently apply certain rules of writing and style guidelines, but that's not so much foolish consistency as just sheer inconsistency, for whatever reason.
Anyhow, that's enough of that: I just have to decide which way is the best to ensure consistency in a particular matter, and apply it, and then I'm done and can eat. Back to it.
